Kenneth Zaslav, MD is internationally known for his expertise in sports medicine, cartilage restoration and conditions of the shoulder. Among his many distinctions, he is board certified in orthopaedic surgery, and has completed fellowships in sports medicine and shoulder surgery. Along with serving as President of Advanced Orthopaedics, Dr. Zaslav is also a Clinical Professor at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University, and he has been a visiting professor in medical schools in China, Chile, Mexico and Venezuela. He is currently affiliated with St. Francis Hospital in Richmond, Virginia.

Education

A native of New York City, Dr. Zaslav graduated from medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, and completed an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He then completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the New York University/Bellevue Medical Centers and also served as a Shoulder Surgery Fellow at Lenox Hill Hospital of New York.

Career

Dr. Zaslav has been with Advanced Orthopaedics since 1990, when he moved here from the Orthopaedic Hospital of Charlotte to practice sports medicine and shoulder surgery. In 1992, he founded the Sports Medicine Center at Advanced Orthopaedics, and in 1997 founded its Cartilage Restoration Center. He is currently President of Advanced Orthopaedics.

Dr. Zaslav is a sought-after speaker in the orthopaedics field. He lectures and writes regularly on topics including the treatment of Articular Cartilage Injury in the knee and shoulder surgery. He is also currently a Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University and a Board Member of The International Cartilage Repair Society.

He serves as the Company Physician for Richmond Ballet: The State Ballet of Virginia and is a Board Director of Virginia Life Science Investment Inc., and the Virginia Bio-Commercialization Center at The Virginia Biotech Park.

In the 1990s, Dr. Zaslav founded and headed the Performing Arts Medicine Center at HealthSouth Hospital, as well as its Sports Motion Analysis Lab. He has served as The Chief of Surgery at Stuart Circle Hospital and The Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Health South Medical Center: Richmond, Virginia.

In the course of his career, he has served as Team physician for The New York University Varsity Athletic Teams, as an assistant orthopaedic surgeon for the New York Islanders (NHL), sports medicine consultant to the U.S. Tennis Association Mid Atlantic Region, chief team physician and Director of Sports Medicine for the Richmond Rage (ABL), and chief team physician for the Richmond Rhythm (IBL).

Awards and Publication

Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Zaslav was a nominee for the distinguished Charles S. Neer Award for Clinical Research from the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES). He is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the National Honor Society.

He continues to publish papers extensively in medical journals, contribute to orthopaedics textbooks, and give presentations and lectures on a broad scale.
