Offering Dry Needling in Austin, TX

At Advanced Orthopedics, our physical therapists offer a whole range of therapy services designed to treat pain and injuries in athletes and non-athletes alike. Our service offerings include myofascial trigger point dry needling therapy in Austin.

Dry needling is done to release shortened bands of muscle that are caused by abnormal nervous system function. This process will restore proper functioning to muscles, making this treatment ideal for patients with chronic pain and stiffness.

How Does Dry Needling Work?

During your dry needling procedure in Austin, one of our physical therapists will use a fine, flexible, sterile needle to penetrate the skin, deactivating myofascial trigger points. Repeated insertion and manipulation produces a twitch response in the muscles, shortening the bands of muscle fiber and relaxing the muscle.

Dry needling offers a number of benefits, including:

  • Improved circulation
  • Reduction of swelling
  • Drug-free treatment
  • Immediate relief of symptoms

During your Austin dry needling treatment, you’ll be in a comfortable position, usually lying down. You may feel a slight prick, but when the muscle relaxes, you won’t feel the needle. We’ll treat multiple myofascial trigger points during each treatment session. Afterwards, you may experience some muscular soreness, but it can usually be alleviated using heat, stretching and over-the-counter medication.

Dry needling is done in conjunction with other types of physical therapy. Duration of treatment varies from person to person.

Trigger Point Dry Needling

Advanced Orthopedics is proud to be offering Trigger Point Dry Needling. Dry Needling uses filament needles (very small), similar to those used during acupuncture. The needle is inserted into a trigger point or local muscle spasm with the goal of releasing biochemicals trapped in that trigger point. When a trigger point is present in a muscle belly, that tissue is no longer contracting or performing normally which can have negative ramifications on the surrounding tissues.

The trigger point can limit full lengthening of the muscle, cause weakness, limit function and create a pattern of local or referred pain to a different area. There is an increasing body of evidence that is strongly supporting the benefits of Trigger Point Dry Needling.

There are different techniques implemented when using Dry Needling. We use pistoning or advancing the needle up and down in order to create multiple local muscle twitches or contractions. The contraction helps the muscle release many of the chemicals that are trapped inside and helps the involved muscle resume its normal length. We can also utilize electrical stimulation which delivers pulses deep within the targeted tissue to elicit muscle relaxation and increase local circulation. Dry needling is an effective treatment for acute and chronic pain, rehabilitation from injury, and even pain and injury prevention, with very few side effects. This technique helps reset the muscle to a more normal state. After dry needling, corrective functional exercises are used to help fire the muscle and to improve its performance.
